Pain in the joints becomes a frequent part of life for many older people. Coping with that fact can be both a literal and figurative pain. There is a vast wealth of data and support available to people learning to cope with joint pain, including medications, warming patches, alternative medicines and acupuncture. Exploring such a vast amount of information can overwhelm people. Although eliminating joint pain completely may be difficult, there are several easy ways people can keep their joint pain down while they seek out a solution for their situation. This article discusses a few of those possible solutions.

First of all, the utmost factor is to remain active on a daily basis. When your joints are causing you pain, moving can be very difficult to do; humans have an innate tendency to tense up, to stay as still as possible and to wait for the pain to simply vanish. But this is not a very effective strategy. Staying still is one of the worst ways to eliminate joint pain. Moving certainly hurts a bit initially, but as your joints loosen up, moving can stop the joints from becoming stiffer and can make regular activities such as sitting down or standing up much more possible. By staying still, you are surrendering to the pain--and the pain will take advantage of that immediately. Low-stress yoga and other gentle stretching exercises are a daily necessity for recovery.

Another strategy for joint pain relief is to stay warm. Cold joints get stiff, and stiff joints hurt. Keeping warm won't eliminate such pain, but like making sure your joints stay loose, it will definitely stop them from worsening. If you are cold, start moving until you warm up. Sedentary activities can make you cold no matter how warm the room is. If you are physically capable, walk up and down the stairs. The motion helps the joints and warms you better many other activities. Wearing appropriate attire when going outside is important. Raise the heat as high as necessary, but don’t forget that simply increasing the thermostat won’t work if you are cold from inactivity.
