What Causes Chronic Joint Pain?

People from all walks of life suffer from pain of the joints, whether acute or chronic. Chronic joint pain lasts for more than two months at a time, as opposed to the "acute" type that is very painful, but only temporary. Living with chronic pain of any sort is very difficult and unpleasant, and joint pain is no different. Simply carrying out everyday tasks like grocery shopping or going up and down stairs becomes an ordeal for those with this type of joint problem.

As you can see, joint pain is nothing to wish for. But what causes chronic joint pain? One of the most common causes is arthritis, especially the more serious type called rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that often causes stiffness and pain in the joints. Another type of arthritis responsible for joint pain is osteoarthritis, which is quite common among people over the age of 45 years. Osteoarthritis causes joint pain as the cartilage surrounding the joint deteriorates.

There are also other autoimmune diseases with chronic joint pain as a symptom, such as bursitis, which is an inflammation or swelling of the bursae, the small sacs of fluid that normally help to make movement smooth and painless.

Not all joint pain is caused by arthritis or autoimmune diseases, though. Fractures and sprains frequently result in joint pain as well, and simply straining or overexerting the joint can cause pain quite similar to that caused by other conditions. If you have had a joint injury in the past, a strain on the joint can sometimes cause chronic joint pain to occur. It’s important in the case of recurring injuries to exercise caution in order to avoid prolonging the pain.

Many people consider chronic joint pain to be something that only elderly people suffer from. However, the many causes of joint pain make it clear that almost anyone can suffer from pains of the joints. Take good care of your body and be cautious when you exercise, and chances are good that you will be able to avoid the aches and misery of chronic joint pain.
